There are 150 mosquito species in the United States and more than 3,000 globally. Generally speaking, they have slender bodies with long legs. Though some are larger than others, most types of mosquitoes are less than 15mm in length and weight less than 2.5 mg. All have one pair of wings.
Behavior, Diet & Habits
Mosquitos are most often associated with feeding on blood, but this is actually only true for adult females. Adult males and females also consume flower nectar while mosquito larvae are generally found in stagnant water and feed on aquatic organisms and flotsam.
Adults are active primarily between dusk and dawn, but they may also become active during the day when it’s cloudy and in dark, well-shaded areas. They are not active in the sun.
Life Cycle
Though the exact length of the mosquito life cycle varies among species and environmental conditions, the cycle is always comprised of the egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. Generally, eggs hatch into larvae in one to two days. They enter the pupal stage in seven to 10 days and once it is fully developed, it will emerge as an adult.
